The Department of Economic Development has responded to a request from the federal government to produce specialized maps detailing the economic impacts of Hurricane Katrina on workers and businesses on the Gulf Coast.
The Missouri Economic Research and Information Center (MERIC) within the Department of Economic Development prepared and recently delivered maps to the U.S. Department of Labor looking at how Hurricane Katrina will affect workers, businesses and transportation systems in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
MERIC was asked to produce maps of the Hurricane damage as part of its larger involvement in a pilot program funded by the U.S. Department of Labor to illustrate how maps and spatial analysis using federal data can be effective tools for decision-making. This is the second year of the center's involvement in the mapping project.
